Virginia
Virginia Summary
(updated 9/12/2004): Hybrids between domestic and exotic/wild
species (including felines and canids) are clearly defined as
‘domestic animals’ by Virginia Administrative Code.
They are legal in the state (but check your county and local laws
as well).
Many species
of exotic animals (especially carnivores like felines & canids)
are not legal in Virginia without a permit from the DGIF (rehabilitator,
exhibitor, or researcher), or have a USDA license to breed, deal,
or exhibit exotic animals. According to Virginia Administrative
Code (section E), an individual with a USDA license is ‘deemed
permitted’ by the DGIF, and does not need an additional
state permit (see link or text provided below). However, the DGIF
must be notified 24 hrs prior to importing an exotic animal into
the state. Note that a USDA license does not supercede local county
and/or town or city regulations; local regulations take precedence.
The USDA does not issue licenses for pets.
